Time Well Spent

This program opened my mind about children, and families, in different ways. This has caused me to think of ways I relate to them. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to study Early Childhood Education.  My first learning important to me is the reflection I went through as required.  I know that I would have never put myself through that process without the requirements of the classes.  Reflecting on life experiences is difficult for me but it also was good for me to see myself as others see me.  As I reflected on the deep pain that I realized was there and have realized those people who hurt me were also hurting.
In addition, I have learned of resources that I now can use to further my own education and the work that I have a desire to do for single parents and their children.  I learned a few of the people who are influential in the Early Childhood Field such as Louise Derman-Sparks, Lilian Katz, and Julie Olsen Edwards. In addition, I have met incredible women in the class who are committed to the field and made friendships that will last. I learned how to look for resources in ways different from what I had before.

The third thing I learned from this program is how to evaluate myself and my relationship to those I desire to serve and teach. I have learned the deep love and commitment to Early Childhood Studies and how to be an influence through a Community of Practice.  Learning of those who have the same love as me has been rewarding.  As we share resources and encourage each other, we learn and have an understanding of true Community of Practice.

My long-term goal is to publish more children’s books, live my life to the fullest for the   Lord,  be a mentor to younger teachers, be a leader in the single parent assistance programs in my community and be a better communicator.  I know that I need to dream deeper and reach further for higher goals.  I have not been a good goal setter until I went to Africa and then I started this program, and now I need to look at where I am going and the purpose of my life in my family, my church, my work and my community.

I thought I would be excited to be finished, and I am, but I am also a little sad as I will miss the discussions and interaction with all my classmates and Dr. Teri.  My prayer is God’s blessing on each one of you. May your journey be blessed with success for you and those you are working.

  1. Barbara,

I also need to dream bigger and set goals. Through the help of God, we will accomplish our dreams and goals, as long as we continue to put him first. The best of luck to you Barbara!
